As we head into boot weather, this is a question you guys frequently ask: How do I wear ankle boots with my jeans?

I’ve teamed up with Nordstrom today to share two outfits, casual and a little dressed up, and two different styles of jeans and boots. Plus I’ll share a few tips for styling any ankle boot with jeans.

Look one is a casual everyday kind of look for fall, with a pair of comfy jeans, a basic tee, a slouchy cardigan sweater, and a pair of 1″ ankle boots. Add a big bag and some sunglasses, and it’s an easy momiform look for cooler weather.

STYLING TIP: For low heeled ankle boots, let 1-2 inches of your ankle show above the ankle boot. If your jeans touch your boots, it gives you a shorter appearance. So give your jeans a little cuff or two! These tips apply to boyfriend jeans too.

Look two is a dressed up date night look. I love this lace up sleeve sweater, and am obsessed with these button up jeans. I paired them with a pair of heeled ankle boots and a small bag for a dressier feel.

STYLING TIP: Heeled ankle boots automatically give you a lift, so your skinny jeans can be longer and it won’t shorten the look of your leg in the same way.  No need to cuff, but don’t tuck them in. You can also wear boyfriend jeans with these, but leave a little skin gap between your boots and pants.

I wrote a whole series of posts on Babble a few years ago about wearing skinny jeans and ankle boots — you can check out the series here, here, here, and here!

note: these tips will vary slightly depending on your body type and the style of jeans and ankle boots, but they’re a good basic guide. If you have questions about specific pairings, leave a comment below!

Tips for colder areas where you don’t want to show your ankles because it’s freezing (like in Switzerland:-))?? Thanks :-)!

Like someone else said, what about if it’s freezing? I’m trying to figure out socks with flat booties, like hightop zip up boot, or desert boots. Thanks!

Socks are a great option! I’d stick with neutral ones, like gray, cream, olive, navy, or black. For taller boots, tuck your skinny jeans into the socks and let the tops of the socks peek out over the boot. For flat boots, cuff your jeans as usual and bunch the socks up until they’re just underneath the cuff of your jeans. Hope that helps!

So glad you posted this! I’m going out this weekend and was trying to figure out how I should cuff and wear my booties!

  10. Amy @ Sunlit Pages says:

Yes, I’d also love to know how you would style these boots if it’s freezing and you don’t want any skin exposed!

  11. cassidy says:

Yes, please tell us how to wear these if we don’t actually want skin at our ankles exposed! Winter is cold here in Japan! If these boots MUST leave skin exposed, would you show us some different boots that are good for cold weather that aren’t UGGS? Haha! Thanks, I so love your website!

Socks or tights are a great option for covering up those ankles and still creating the gap between the boots and jeans. Or you can wear a taller boot and tuck your jeans into those 🙂 I’ll share some good options on the blog soon!

What size is your lace up sweater, reading the reviews on Nordstrom and not sure what size to pick! Super cute.

  13. Hey dear, Thanks a lot for sharing such a great post on how to style boots with jeans. I have got some awesome ideas and information in your post. Your way of clothing is simply wow. I like your styles very much. I very agree with you “STYLING TIP: For low heeled ankle boots, let 1-2 inches of your ankle show above the ankle boot. If your jeans touch your boots, it gives you a shorter appearance. So give your jeans a little cuff or two! These tips apply to boyfriend jeans too.” Hope this will help me out so much.
