I’ve never been a big sports fan, except going to BYU football games, and even then I had seriously no idea what was going on. And then I married virtually the world’s biggest sports fan. He likes to watch pretty much every sport on TV and he knows all about every single sport whether he enjoys it or not. In the last year and a half, he’s actually converted me to enjoying a lot of sports, including horse racing.
Since it’s been the Triple Crown (a month ago I didn’t even know what that meant) over the past few weeks, we’ve sat down and watched them. I have never watched it before in my life, and all the sudden I was SO into it! At the Preakness Stakes a few weeks ago I got so nervous, hoping Big Brown would be the winner…And then when he won I was thrilled! Then today came and I was so sure that he was going to win (not that I know ANYTHING…) and then when he lost I was so bummed.
It’s kind of weird that I get into stuff after such a short time and without knowing anything. But either way I’m sad Big Brown didn’t win. Did anyone else watch it? And cheer for Big Brown?
I was thinking this was my sister’s blog, but I appear to have come to the wrong one. Sorry! 🙂
Didn’t watch. But I saw headlines about Big Brown on Google News. That counts for something, no?
I too saw it online. Very sad. Didn’t watch though. With all my Dick Francis novels about horse racing, lately I was paying a bit more attention than usual. A good sports event now and then is a great thing!
I heard about it. Dave’s grandpa had horses that raced in Florida in the 70’s…one of his horses in particular won a few different big races (but since I dont know much about the sport, I dont know which ones) Anyways, there is definatley a lot of money in it…maybe I should buy myself a horse and a little man to ride it 🙂
If your children grow up in a house with someone who watches every sport event on TV they will either love it along with him or hate them with a passion! Take it from one wno knows. I was a cheerleader for the fun uniforms, not the sports!!! (If you have more than one TV it may not be so awful…)
I really debated about commenting on this, but after reading Miriam’s comment…
Sports on TV (especially football) sends me right up through the ceiling.
I grew up with a sports watching, hunting, camping, and fishing fanatic dad. He shoved it down our throats. We went to and did all kinds – in all weather – whether we wanted to go or not – whether we had homework to do or not – whether we had other plans or not.
My dad forced my brothers to play all kinds of sports. (One brother was very athletic, so he was the golden boy.) Dad constantly publicly and privately harangued my mom, my youngest brother, and me about being clutzy book worms.
As for TV, when sports were on we had to be very quiet, but I had to be available to wait on my dad. (This was at the expense of practicing the piano and doing school work.) If sports were on and Mom wasn’t home and we needed to go somewhere, too bad.
Oh, yeah, my mom finally decided she couldn’t take it anymore. I still avoid my dad as much as possible, because he always lets me know that I never measured up to his “standards”.
In the past 6-7 years, I watched this same type of thing happen to a friend and her children. In this case, my friend’s husband was a concert pianist and conductor. No one was as good as he was or ever would be as good.
I’m not saying this will happen in your house. I just wanted you to be aware of what can happen when someone is a fanatic about something.
