Great Books For Boys

I’m so happy that my love of books has passed down to my boys. I read aloud to my boys every night before bed, and they also love reading on their own. Here are some great books for boys that my 12, 9 and 6 year olds are reading this summer!

What my 12 year old is reading right now

  • Theodore Boone, by John Grisham. This is a fun series about a boy who dreams of becoming a lawyer when he grows up, but finds himself in the middle of helping solve cases as a 13 year old. It’s full of twists and turns, and my son flew through the first four books and is itching to read the next three.
  • Seven Wonders, by Peter Larengis. Another great series about a 12 year old boy who bands with his friends to find and retrieve seven magical ancient orbs that were lost among the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. B is on book two and loving this 5 book series.
  • Masterminds by Gordon Korman. B hasn’t been able to stop talking about this series! The kids live in a seemingly idyllic and crime free town, until one of them bikes outside the city limits and discovers that the town is covering up some huge secrets. It’s a 3 part series and he flew through all three of them.
  • Adventurers Wanted, by M.L. Forman. This is a 5 book series about a 15 year old boy who inquires about a job posting, “Adventurers Wanted” and ends up in a faraway land battling trolls and dragons and other magical creatures.
  • City Spies, by James Ponti. Five kids from all over the world, band together in a secret MI6 agency, to save the world. My oldest read this whole 4-book series in a few days, he loved it so much!
  • A Tale of Magic, by Christopher Colfer. A three-book series about a girl who discovers she has magic and is thrust into the fairytale world where magic performed by women is illegal. She and her friends embark on an adventure to prove that magic is important and good!

What my 9 year old is reading right now

  • Cam Jansen,by David A. Adler. I read so many of these books as a kid and loved them, so it’s fun to pass these along to my boys! They’re mystery books, and every mystery is solved by a girl with a photographic memory.
  • Tales from Deckawoo Drive. If you haven’t read the Mercy Watson series, you must! They’re a hilarious series about a couple who has a pet pig. The Tales from Deckawoo Drive series is an extension of the Mercy Watson series, but they’re longer novels and focus on the secondary characters in the Mercy Watson books.
  • Heroes of Olympus, by Rick Riordan. My older boys are huge fans of Rick Riordan, and he liked this series so much that he’s re-reading it, after reading the whole five part book series.

What my 6 year old is reading right now

  • Magic Tree House, by Mary Pope Osborne. My 6 year old has mostly listened to the audiobook versions, but as he’s becoming a stronger reader, he’s checking them out of the library and reading the physical book. They’re fun magical adventures stories about a brother and sister, and there are nearly 100 in the series!
  • Pearl and Wagner, by Kate McMullan. This is a good early reader series about a mouse and bunny and their adventures together.
  • Dragon Series, by Dav Pilkey. My boys grabbed these from the library last week and have been enjoying them. They’re super simple and easy reads, about a blue Dragon and his adventures.
  • Elephant and Piggie by Mo Willems. If you’re not familiar with Elephant and Piggie, it’s a darling series about two friends — an elephant and a pig, and their silly adventures together.

The habit of reading books is a good habit for children, and should be practiced from an early age. Reading helps children think multi-dimensionally and more quickly

Seven Wonders by Peter Larenzis. Another great series about a 12 year old boy who bands with his friends to find and retrieve seven magical ancient jewels that have been lost in the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.I would suggest livingwisdomschoolassisi.com as a resource for this since it instructs in critical analysis and offers other helpful information.
