Over the last year or so, as my hair has gotten pretty long, I’ve started washing it only about twice a week. Although I can wear it down for a few days with the help of dry shampoo and baby powder, there comes a point after a few days where I just can’t get away with wearing it down. So a big bun it is. Inspired by the bun in this pin, I’ve started doing a giant fluffy bun regularly, and it’s perfect for day four or five hair. Although I don’t have a ton of hair, the key is to tease or rat your hair, and then suddenly your thin-ish hair can make a ginormous bun.
Here’s a little tutorial on how I do it.
sweater: target (not online anymore, check your local store) // necklace: c/o inpink |
Happy dirty hair! 🙂
Lol! You are so cute! Thanks, I will try this for sure! I usually opt for a sock bun, but this will be a nice change!
Love this! I try to go 3 days without washing if possible, because I know washing your hair often is SO bad, but I usually cave on day 2 because I just don't know what to do with it on days 3 and 4. Can't wait to try this out!
try using dry shampoo, my fav is by AG. i have gone a week without washing thanks to the shampoo. AND TRUST ME, i would have NEVER done this before finding this amazing product!
Super cute! I think if I tried this it would end up looking like a rats nest though! haha 🙂
It looks great! I have my hair up in a messy bun the majority of the week! Thanks for the tutorial! I'm definitely going to try it out 🙂

I have been wondering how to do this! Thank you!
Haha – I just did this bun this morning before I read this tutorial. It is also my dirty hair go-to and with not-quite-grown-out bangs, I also add in a fun headband.
Oh, great idea to add a headband!
Looks great! There is so much volume in the bun, I love it.
I think I like it best all ratted out all over the place, hahaha! I love giant buns.. your hair always looks flawless. -♥- Rachel (For the Birds)
How does the back look? When I try this, it either looks like a rats nest or its too piecey from my layers. And I have LONG THICK Hair. Sugguestions??? 🙂
The back looks pretty much the same as the front…just wrap slowly, smoothing as you go, and it won't look like a rats nest in the back.
So cute! I love the big bun thing…its such a must have for us busy Moms!!!!
Great tutorial…I love the visual of 'like, a lot of ratting.' Funny, but helpful because I would never have gone this far.
Ha, I know…my favorite picture of myself ever 😉
So cute! I don't have a ton of hair, and if I don't do a little teasing, I've got nothing. I'll see what happens with this much teasing–bigger bun, here I come!
This looks great! I can't wait until I have longer hair and can pull it into a high bun like this 🙂 I've worn my hair at chin length for about 5 years so I'm excited to have long hair again 🙂

so cute! i love the idea of using an elastic instead of a million bobby pins (: that never works for me
Yes! Way more comfortable for my head too 🙂
Just wanted some clarification on what is being sprayed in step 3. Dry shampoo?
It's hairspray!
you make that look so simple!! I still need a sock to make my buns look good!
Cute!
I'm usually hesitant to tease my hair because I'm afraid of breakage and damage, and it's becomes a mess to comb out the next day. Have you had any problems getting the teasing out after? or any damage to your hair? (your hair looks flawless and healthy all the time, so I'm wondering what your teasing secret is!)
Oh, you're so nice. I haven't noticed any breaking or damaging from the teasing…and I just comb it out as carefully as possible when I take out the bun!
Fabulous bun!

Lucky you! I have to wash my hair everyday or else it gets soo oily and nope even the dry shampoo cant salvage it 🙁 Would love to try the bun someday…. if only my hair would cooperate!
with all the rants about my hair.. I completely forgot to tell you that I love this hairdo on you!
I see you got the Target sweater! Looks ADORABLE on you.
I've always been a fluffy bun girl (maybe just because my hair is naturally 'fluffy'). You look so cute in the photos! 🙂
Huge fan. I've also recently switched to the twice a week regimen and this is exactly the kind of style I need to survive that 3rd/4th day. Already posted on my blog about this tutorial. 🙂 Also–we use the same kind of dry shampoo! I am clueless when it comes to hair so it's nice to find out I'm doing something right.
So I am really jealous that both you and Janssen can go days without washing your hair. Alas, curly hair does not allow that. Even as I write this (after washing my hair about 15 hours ago), I can feel how dry it is. But your hair looks gorgeous! 🙂
What do you do after you've exercised?? Does your head sweat?? I know this is a totally gross question but hey! Do you just let it dry and cover it up with dry shampoo??
