Our Family Halloween Costumes Over the Years: Group Costume Ideas for Families

Family Halloween costumes are one of my favorite traditions. Over the past six years, we’ve come up with some fun, creative, and easy-to-pull-together group costume ideas that worked for both kids and adults. Whether you’re planning something simple or going all out, here’s a look back at our family costumes for inspiration!

Every October, our family starts brainstorming what to be for Halloween, it’s become one of our favorite parts of fall. With two adults and three boys, we’ve done everything from funny pop culture moments to classic themed looks that are easy to recreate. I thought it would be fun to put all of our past family Halloween costumes in one place, so if you’re looking for group costume ideas, you can find inspiration for all ages right here.

2019: Harry Potter Family Costume

Our Harry Potter year was pure magic. Everyone got into character, and we already had a few costume pieces from previous years, so it came together easily. It’s such a great family costume idea because there are endless character options, especially if you’ve got multiple kids and want something cohesive but customizable. We were reading Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban at that time, so we chose prominent characters from that book.

2020: Rockstar Group Costume

Our 2020 theme was rockstars, and it was such a blast. We went all in with fake tattoos, band tees, leather jackets, and wild hair. The boys had so much fun pretending to be in a band, and it made for some of our favorite Halloween photos ever. It was edgy, easy to pull together, and definitely a family favorite.

2021: Circus Family Costume

The circus theme might have been one of the most creative we’ve ever done. It was so fun seeing it all come together. This one gave us lots of flexibility for makeup, props, and color, which made for some really fun photos! And yes, I built that Zoltar fortune-telling machine!

2022: Football-Themed

Our 2022 theme was all about football! With three boys, this one was a big hit. I built that mascot head for over a month ahead. Definitely a great choice if you want a no-stress (minus the mascot mask!) family costume that still feels coordinated.

2023: Skeleton Family

One of my favorite Halloween costumes to date! It took us over 2 hours to paint everyone’s faces, it started raining right as we left to take pictures, but it all worked out!

2024: Fast Food Mascots

This year’s theme might be one of my all-time favorites. We dressed up as classic fast food mascots. It was colorful, instantly recognizable, and a little silly. The boys loved getting to pick their “restaurant,” and it ended up being such a fun, lighthearted theme that got tons of laughs all night.

Looking back at these costumes makes me realize how much fun it’s been to come up with something new each year. Some ideas were simple and last-minute, and others took a little more planning—but every single one has turned into a core memory for our family. Whether you go all out or keep it easy, doing a family costume together adds a layer of joy (and a little chaos) that makes Halloween so much more memorable.
