Are you stuck in a rut of wearing the same thing over and over again? I’ve got you covered with these simple four tips that will help you see your closet in a new light and put together fresh, fun outfits.

I spent most of my life in a closet rut!

When I was in middle school and high school I drove my mom crazy because she’d buy me new things to wear but I’d still wear the same three or four things constantly.

And even as an adult, I totally fell into that — my favorite things would get put on repeat and more than half my closet would go unworn.

I’m sure many of you can relate and have found yourself in this kind of rut before!

I partnered with Nordstrom today to share three easy tips that will help you get out of that rut and get your entire closet back. Trust me, these tips are easy and doable!

These four tips will help you get out of the rut of wearing the same thing over and over.

1. Separate your clothes into seasons and keep only one season in your closet at a time.

This is such a helpful way to organize your closet and avoid having everything you own stuffed in one closet. When you can actually see what you have, it’s so much easier to reach for items you’d forgotten about. If you’re overwhelmed just walking into your closet, of course you’re going to reach for that item hanging at the very front that you’ve already worn twice this week.

If you have an extra closet in your house or another bedroom, you could store your off season shoes, bags, and clothes in there. Or you can pack them up in a storage container and keep them in the garage or under your bed.

Bonus! When you bring out the new season, it’s like having an entirely new wardrobe!

2. Find inspiration on Instagram or Pinterest.

Instagram and Pinterest are literally a treasure trove of outfit ideas. I love looking through, seeing an outfit on someone, and realizing I have pieces in my closet to re-create that outfit. It helps me re-think my closet a little bit and wear something in a new way, and that always sparks creativity for days for me.

I have an entire Pinterest board dedicated to outfit inspiration, and also Instagram’s “bookmark/save” tool lets you save people’s posts and organize them into folders for easy reference.

Take advantage of these, fill your boards/folders up, and when you’re feeling in a rut pull these up and put together an outfit!

3. Choose your outfits in advance.

If you’re running late or are rushed in the morning, you’re for sure going to reach for something safe. And you’ll stay right in your closet rut.

If you choose your outfits in advance, you can try a few combinations and push yourself out of your rut a little bit.

I promise, the extra few minutes you can spend thinking about your outfit will help you choose something much better than you would choose last minute. Try it!!

4. Buy something out of your comfort zone and have FUN with your closet!

Sometimes it takes a little push out of your comfort zone to get out of a rut and feel like your closet is a little bit more FUN. Maybe it’s a new style of blouse you’ve never tried before, or a fun dress (like this gorgeous tiered one), or a pair of unique sandals (loving these ones!), or a pair of statement earrings. Whatever it is, push beyond the everyday pieces and get something BETTER THAN BASIC.

Nordstrom is one of my go-tos for basics, but they also have great pieces that are fun and unique. They have a huge selection of clothing items, which can totally feel overwhelming, so I always use their filters on the sidebar to narrow down the search results and find exactly what I’m looking for. I searched for spring dresses with a midi length and short sleeves, and when this pink dress came up, it immediately caught my eye. I found a few other pretty dresses and linked them in the widget below!

I hope those tips help — try it and get out of your closet rut!

These four tips will help you get out of the rut of wearing the same thing over and over.

1. Separate your clothes into seasons and keep only one season in your closet at a time.

This is such a helpful way to organize your closet and avoid having everything you own stuffed in one closet. Bonus! When you bring out the new season, it’s like having an entirely new wardrobe!

Note: I do this for spring/summer and fall/winter, so I rotate twice during the year.

Love these tips! Your M.GEMI sneakers are so cute! You about had be sold on the Ecco sneakers though. How do they compare? Both super COmfortable? Are the M.gemi a little higher in the sole?
    Thanks!

If I had to choose for comfort, I’d choose the Ecco. The M.Gemi ones are really comfortable too, but the leather is a little more stiff and takes a little longer to break in. But I love the structure of them!

The Ecco ones are buttery soft and have that lived in feel from the moment you put them on.

Also, other differences: the M.Gemi ones do have a higher platform sole, whereas the Ecco ones have a shorter sole and the rubber bumps on the bottom (which are very comfortable to walk in). So it just depends on your look preference, if you like the solid higher sole or not.

One other difference is the shape of the shoe. The M.Gemi one is more narrow with more of an almond shaped toe, where the Ecco shoe has more of a rounded toe.

Honestly, they’re both amazing shoes and go with everything and are insanely comfortable. Either would be amazing. Hopefully those points help you make a decision!

Oh, one last thing — you can use code MERRICK60 for $60 off any full priced pair of shoes at M.Gemi!

Another tip is to organize your pinterest boards by season/weather as well as your clothes. I have boards for hot, warm, cool, and cold weather and it makes things easier when I am looking for inspiration. Of course, now that I live in Texas (hi Merrick!) I don’t need the cold one so much.
