About two months ago I started taking a daily collagen supplement.
I’ve mentioned before that I’ve dubbed this the year of my skin. My skin has been through the ringer the past fifteen years starting with acne from puberty, and then through three pregnancies, three years of nursing babies, and then wacky hormones after pregnancy and nursing. Whew.
So I’m making a lot of changes in my routines, and doing lots of skincare treatments this year to help reverse some of the damage.
Collagen is the protein structure that holds your body together, basically like a scaffolding for your entire body. It’s found all through your body, but most prominently in your skin, bones, and joints, and as you age, your body produces less collagen.
So by taking a collagen supplement, you’re able to regenerate some of the growth and structure in your skin and bones, helping it to be stronger and smoother.
I did some research and discovered this collagen powder from Vital Proteins, and it’s a simple powder you can toss in your morning coffee or smoothie because it dissolves in liquid.
I don’t drink coffee, and smoothies can be a lot of calories and sugar, so instead I came up with this easy little Orange Julius-inspired drink that is tasty and takes one minute to make.
Collagen Powder “Orange Julius”
Makes 1 serving
– 1 cup orange juice (any kind works!)
– 2 scoops Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides powder
In a blender, blend thoroughly until powder is completely dissolved. Pour into a glass and drink immediately while it’s frothy and cold. I personally like to drink it with a straw!
note: the powder is tasteless, but it does have a little bit of a weird smell to it. The orange juice mostly masks it, and drinking with a straw keeps your nose farther away from the glass, but I still sometimes get a hint of a weird smell. Just FYI!
I’ve been drinking this every day for about two months, and within about a week I noticed a change in my skin — specifically in my cheekbones and around my eyes. My skin looked fuller and more glowy. And then within a few more weeks, I noticed that my knees, which are always creaking and popping, almost never creaked or popped anymore.
