I know many of you, maybe most of you, or maybe all of you hate Picasso. Well, I can see why you might hate him and think that his art is juvenile and ridiculous. But if I could sit down with you for one hour and explain to you what Picasso did for the art world and tell you how much I. Love. Picasso….you might change your mind. Or maybe not.
Last night in art class we talked about Cubism, which was Picasso’s defining movement. Painting and drawing people and objects from different angles was the beginning of Cubism and the start of Picasso’s huge creative impact (AKA. AWESOMENESS). Check out a painting from his early years of cubism:
Do you seriously hate that?
After talking for a while about cubism, we dove into a cubist project, making a single point on the paper and from that point deriving three lines. Between each of these lines there was an angle, which we were to treat as its own canvas. We moved around the room and did three drawings of the model from different angles, each drawing inside one of the three angles on our paper — a very simplified version of what Picasso and other cubists did.
Now after that if you still hate Picasso as much or more than you did before, call me. We must talk. And I will cry for you.
I've liked Picasso's art ever since we went to the Picasso museum in Paris.
But the man was a jerk. Too bad.
When I was in college I took a class that was a three week art history tour of Europe. One place that we visited was the Picasso museum in Barcelona. Although I may not enjoy looking at Picasso's works as much as I like looking at a Monet painting, for instance, I was very glad that we visited that museum and I came to appreciate his talent.
I just wanted to add that it was actually Salvador Dali's work that I just couldn't wrap my mind around. I thought that much of his stuff was just plain weird!
I love the Picasso museum too. I particularly find the War paintings fascinating. I really like your drawings. What a cool way to do cubism.
It's usually my ignorance that gets in the way of me appreciating something. Once I take the time to learn about it, my attitude often changes. I enjoy Monet over Picasso, but I'm sure it's my ignorance showing through.
Sorry, MB. I've never been a fan of Picasso. Art should have stopped evolving at Cezanne. 🙂
I can see the genius in his work. I'm not a rabid fan, but I think it's foolish that people write off art work saying that a child could do the same thing. It's so much more than that! And the sheer evolution of how art happens- it's just amazing!
Truly, I'm not a big Picasso fan. I am impressed with what you drew.
I hate Picasso. Because he is taking so much media space and resources from contemporary artist like my self. I currently work in a museum which is gonna be filled with his art this is making me really sad. If you are in Moscow.. You can see his work in The State Puskin Museum 25.Feb onwards. And meet a bitter Museum Employee: http://www.ihatepicasso.wordpress.com
Love Picasso, but I can pretend to hate him if it means you’ll talk to me about him? Love your tri–partitioned drawings, they are extremely impressive!
