In case you’ve missed the memo, neutrals are huge for spring. Typically all the bright or pastel colors are coming out, but this year the runways have been filled with creams, blushes, and golds. At first I was unsure about it, since I love colorful springs, but the more I’ve seen it, the more I’ve fallen in love with such simple and subdued color palettes. It just feels so fresh.
Head to toe neutrals can be difficult to style without your outfit falling flat, so I created a couple of outfits with some pieces from Johnston and Murphy’s new spring line to show you some tips for rocking the neutral trend this spring (you can also see them over at the StyleList gallery)!
Tip #1.
Try variations in the same color family.
Rather than going with all white, or all blush, or all gold, try a little bit of each. Here I paired a speckled oatmeal sweater with white jeans, rose gold flats, a gold statement necklace, and a blush colored bag. All of the hues are similar, but different enough to create visual interest.

Tip #2.
Play with subtle textures and patterns.
Subtle stripes, polka dots, lace, bows, fur, sequins….they are all fair game here. In fact, the more texture and pattern you add, the better that neutral outfit will be. I paired my gray and white striped jacket with a lace top, which creates some great subtle pattern and texture, and wore them with a light wash pair of denim (with some distressing for extra texture)! Then threw on a pair of wedges with floppy bow laces for the finishing touch.

I've always gravitated towards neutrals, so I'm quite excited! P.S. I love those shoes!
Do you have any tips for us really fair skinned gals to pull off head to toe neutrals? I LOVE the neutral color palettes, but with my very pale skin and dark hair I feel I look like death warmed over if I try to wear those colors near my face without breaking it up with a jewel toned cami or something along those lines.
I loooove both of these looks so much! And really love the shoes 🙂 Great tips for spring!

Those wedges from Johnston Murphy are amazing!
OK…I have bought and returned 3 different pair of white jeans now and need help. Have you found any that are opaque enough not to show any…"underware"…lines…
you know what I mean…
That jacket is just PERFECT, Merrick! I've been looking for something similar for so long, and got one recently at Target that is really cute, but yours is way better…. and of course totally too expensive for me 🙁
I love the second outfit, it is just beautiful and perfect for spring!
I love both outfits, you look really cute. Thanx for sharing
I love how the grey stripes almost look pale blue when paired with other neutrals. Great outfits!
Yep, I'm with you on the neutral thing! I've been more and more drawn to simple, neutral outfits lately, and I really like how both of yours look. Blush is one of my recent favorite colors, and I'd love to find a pair of blush jeans or flats to add to my wardrobe!
