DIY Friday: A-Line Plaid Skirt with Gold Buttons

red and navy plaid skirt

Outfit Details:

Plaid Skirt (made by me, tutorial below, similar here, here and here), White Tee, Suede Jacket, Similar Ankle Boots, Karen Walker Sunglasses

I’ve had this plaid skirt on my mind for at least a year, and finally got around to making it. It’s the most perfect fall skirt, with the navy and red plaid, and then the gold buttons add such a bold and classic touch.

It would be so cute with a chunky sweater, or a tissue turtleneck tee, but I paired with a classic white t-shirt and my favorite suede jacket.

I’m sharing step by step instructions at the bottom of the post!

First, cut your pattern pieces. Remember, I don’t provide printable patterns. Use this video tutorial if you need to create your own patterns. You’ll need a SKIRT FRONT piece (cut on the folded edge), two SKIRT BACK pieces, and then WAISTBAND LINING pieces to match both of those. You’ll also need a SKIRT FRONT PANEL piece. This should be about 2/3 of the width of your skirt front – don’t forget to add an inch on each side for seam allowance!

Step 1. Take your SKIRT FRONT PANEL piece and hem the sides as shown.

Step 2. Now take the PANEL and pin to the front of your skirt. Sew directly over the original seam. Now you’ll just treat this as one piece.

Step 3. Add darts to your SKIRT BACK pieces on either side. This will allow it to hug your curves.

Step 4. With right sides together, take your FRONT WAISTBAND LINING and your SKIRT FRONT pieces and sew them together at the waist.

Step 5. Repeat step 3 with the SKIRT BACK and WAISTBAND pieces.

Step 6. Insert your zipper, following the instructions on the packaging. Then sew up the rest of the skirt back.

Step 7. Take your SKIRT FRONT and SKIRT BACK pieces and (with right sides together) sew up the sides. Make sure the WAISTBAND LINING is flipped up while you sew it together. Then trim your seam allowances and tuck the waistband inside the skirt.

Step 8. Hem your skirt to your desired length, and then “stitch in the ditch” (stitch directly on top of the existing side seam) on either side of the waistband to secure the lining in place.

Step 9. Use a needle and thread to sew your gold buttons on the front.

Where did you get your fabric? And what type of fabric is it?

Ugh man, I wish I could remember where I got the fabric! I was thinking it was from fabric.com, but I can’t find it on there. But it’s a medium weight woven of some kind. Like a cotton flannel blend maybe? Sorry, completely unhelpful!!

Uh, this skirt is just what I’ve been looking for! I need to ask my mother in law to check this post and DIY guides and make one for me. 😀

Merrick, did you make your pattern for this skirt from an existing a-line skirt that you already have?

What an amazing DIY skirt. You are really impressive with the sewing machine. You’ve inspired me to pull out my sewing machine and start a little project. I’m starting small, napkins for this years Thanksgiving dinner. Wish me luck and have a lovely Monday!
